BROTHER RICE VOLUME 55, ISSUE 3 Chieftain NOVEMBER 2015 ‘Shark Tank’ Coming, Rice Style New entrepreneurial program revises hit show for community By Jacob The Hutt Chieftain Staff You have probably heard of “Shark Tank,” a reality show on ABC where entrepreneurs seek investors. Well, Brother Rice has formed a similar program called the “Warrior Den.” The Warrior Den is open to Brother Rice Seniors and recent graduates (Classes of 2006-16). Entrepreneurs will pitch their ideas in front of a panel of Brother Rice alumni and successful business leaders and investors. The grand prize is $250,000 in venture capital. “I feel great and excited about this new program,” said Mr. Birney. “It teaches the students to be independent, innovative, and hardworking.” The idea first started when an Economics class watched an episode of “Shark Tank” and discussed bringing a similar contest to our community. Another organization that promoted the idea was BEAM&R (Business and Entrepreneur Alliance at Marian & Rice). “BEAM&R was a very positive influence in this whole program,” according to Mr. Birney. “It promotes entrepreneurship.” “BEAM&R and the Warrior Den [fit together],” said Mr. Dyar, one of the BEAM&R Moderators. “This program is kind of like our BEAM&R competition called DECA, where the competitors take what they learned and apply it in See WARRIOR DEN on Page 2 B R OTHE R R IC E H IG H S C H O O L C H I E F TA I N A Galaxy Far Far Away The Chieftain dives into the upcoming hit By Nolan Skywalker Chieftain Staff For Star Wars fans everywhere, the wait is almost over. The seventh edition of the Star Wars series is set to be released on Dec. 18. Thirty-eight years since the release of the first episode, A New Hope, comes The Force Awakens. The hype for a movie could not get bigger, especially considering the second trilogy was not up to the standards of the original. In a year filled with highly anticipated movies, this one stands out, and for good reason. So many people grew up watching and loving Star Wars, hoping for more. There is much to be excited about in the upcoming movie: new characters, new planets and, most of all, the return of the big three: Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) Our very own Star Wars super fan, Mr. Kuschel, said he is most excited to see the return of the original characters and how they have evolved. There is also excitement about new faces in the saga, such as Finn (John Boyega), Rey (Daisy P AGE 1 Riddley), and Poe Dameron (Adam Driver). The anticipation for this movie is high: The trailer had 128 million views in the first 24 hours of its release. The movie is expected to make over $600 million in its opening weekend and $2 billion overall, which would trail only Avatar ($2.8 billion) and Titanic ($2.2) in all-time gross box office sales. When there’s this much hype around a movie, all sorts of predictions come out. A popular guess is that Luke Skywalker will turn evil, and become a Sith Lord. Another prediction, and a bold one at that, is that the Gungan General, Jar Jar See STAR WARS on Page 2 INSIDE What we’re thankful for See Page 5 N O V E M B E R 2015
